“Verity” by Colleen Hoover is a fantastic romance/psychological thriller that will keep you up all night turning the pages. The blend of genres—romance and psychological thriller—could leave you questioning what you’re about to get yourself into. Let me assure you by leading with the comfort that Colleen wrote this book to mold all of the undertones together beautifully. It’s both a little disturbing and very captivating.
This book was recommended to me by a friend who inspired me to get back into reading for fun in my free time. She told me it’s quickly paced and that I wouldn’t have to wait until halfway through the book to start getting interested in the plot. She was right, and I’m glad she was, because it was this book that sprung me into another reading phase. This book will indeed have your heart rapidly pulsing.
Lowen Ashleigh is the main character we follow throughout this crazy, suspenseful story. She’s a struggling writer who gets an opportunity to finish out a very famous and successful book series by an author named Verity Crawford. A tragic accident leaving Verity unable to finish the series on her own leaves Lowen with hope for her own career as she takes on the tail end of this project that has already been preceded by success.
Lowen finds herself moving into the author’s home to surround herself with Verity’s notes when she discovers an incomplete autobiography. This provides the readers with a turning point in perspective, as we are reading through the mind of Lowen as she is reading through the mind of Verity. As you can imagine, Lowen uncovers some dark and twisty secrets revolving around Verity’s accident, all while living in her house.
This novel is particularly interesting in the way it’s set up because of the unique situation of our main character living amongst Verity, her husband, and their family. You are constantly turning the page because Lowen is spending all day and night at home, where the mystery is set to be solved with the clues needed in the next room in Verity’s office. The setting adds to the already tense and unsettling situation.
I mentioned dark and twisty turns, right? This book is full of plot twists and suspenseful elements that will have you fully energized in the middle of the night because your heart and mind are racing to get to the next scene.
Colleen blurs the lines between what we know, what we perceive, and what’s true. The entire novel has an eerie undertone that leaves you feeling tense until the end.
If this sounds like a fun reading adventure to you, then “Verity” is a great choice. I appreciate Colleen for deviating from her usual sector of romance drama novels, showing she can do both and do it well.
