November 9” by Colleen Hoover is a romance novel that will have you itching to get to the end and rooting for love. The way the story is told over a period of five years is what initially made me invest in the characters and their story.

It’s an emotional novel with an intriguing undertone as you get to know more about the main characters’ pasts and how they evolve with each passing year. This leaves you almost in a state of suspense the entire book, wondering where, when, and if their paths will continue to cross and where they will end up.

Fallon is a beautifully created character, as she is both emotionally and physically affected by a house fire that left her scarred. A day before her move to New York, she fatefully meets Ben, who is an aspiring writer.

Despite their immediate chemistry and connection, as Fallon is rekindling her passion and confidence to pursue acting, they agree to meet every year on November 9th to reconnect. This is the point of the plot that gives you a suspenseful sense of uncertainty, as we can only hope they stick to this agreement.

Colleen Hoover seems to never fail to give us a book that will keep us turning the page. She also has a knack for writing complex characters while sharing plenty of insight into what makes them tick. This is apparent in “November 9,” as we get a dual perspective on Ben and Fallon, highlighting the emotional themes.

Fallon and Ben’s story is inspiring, as we get to see them transform over five years. We uncover secrets along the way, and the more we learn, the more we want to know how all of the pieces are going to fit in the end. Each year on November 9th, we are brought new developments—negative, positive, and everything in between.

You would never guess how intense this book is just by the summary until you read it. You’ll likely go through as many emotions as the characters, as Colleen is a professional at hitting the right notes. She shows the importance of the independent growth of Fallon and Ben apart, which is pivotal in the story of their relationship with each other. You can’t go wrong with any book by Colleen Hoover, but this one is definitely a must-read.
